Don't expect staff at the front desk wearing suits. This place is very traditional, local, and kind!
True Japanese omotenashi. Service and staff were friendly and relaxed.

It is not a convenient location to get to if you don't go by car. Bus timings are pretty specific and far in between. I'd recommend to really study the bus timetable beforehand and give yourself ample time. Buses from Echigo-Yuzawa station are roughly 1 every hour and last bus is aroud 4pm. From the hotel back to the station, it was about 1 every 3 hours. So do plan well if you don't drive or don't want to take a taxi. There also isn't any other restaurants around. It's pretty far from other places. So I'd recommend to get the dinner and breakfast at the hotel if you can. Their food are really delicious. The main downside for me is that while very comfortable physically, the room is quite dusty and I am more allergic to dust than my partner so I sneezed a lot more and had really stuffy nose throughout my sleep. My partner had less problems with it than me though. To him, this was one of the best stay of our trip.
We went in the winter. Setoguchi is a really nice looking ryokan. The location is really beautiful as are the rooms. Hotel staff are really nice and friendly! I can speak some broken Japanese and the staff can speak simple English, so we communicated a lot with hand motions. But it was a lot of fun and I will miss them. Food and the dinning experience is great! I had dinner and breakfast there and I must say it's one of the best meals I've had throughout the trip. I highly recommend people to get it. P.s You can place order for breakfast the night before in case you are mulling over it at moment of booking. Their public bath is not very big but very comfortable for a good soak. Definitely very clean. It's one of the enjoyable parts of my trip. It's a really nice place to chill and relax and eat good food. Helps a lot if you know some Japanese, but staff still try their best to communicate with you. Overall, I've really enjoyed this place a lot and would recommend it to people who want a more down to earth ryokan experience.
